1. Check Your Monthly Electricity Use

Start with your electric bill. Look for your monthly usage in kWh, or kilowatt-hours.

For reference, an average U.S. home uses around 850 to 900 kWh per month, but your number may be higher or lower depending on your home size, climate, appliances, and lifestyle.

To find your daily usage, divide your monthly kWh by 30.

For example, if your home uses 900 kWh per month:

900÷30=30 kWh per day

So your solar system would need to generate about 30 kWh per day to cover your full electricity use.

2. Check Your Local Sunlight

Solar panels do not produce full power all day. They produce the most during peak sun hours, when sunlight is strong enough for good solar output.

A sunny state like Arizona, Nevada, Texas, or California may get around 5 to 6.5 peak sun hours per day. Cloudier or northern regions, such as the Northeast or Pacific Northwest, may get closer to 3 to 4 peak sun hours per day.

This matters a lot. The same home will need more panels in New York than in Arizona because the panels receive fewer strong sunlight hours.

3. Calculate the Solar System Size

Here is the basic formula:

Daily kWh use÷Peak sun hours=Solar system size in kW

Example:

If your home uses 30 kWh per day and your area gets 5 peak sun hours:

30÷5=6 kW

That means you need about a 6kW solar system before accounting for real-world losses.

4.Calculate the Number of Panels

Now divide the system size by the wattage of each panel.

If you use 400W panels:

6000W÷400W=15panels

So in this example, a home using 900 kWh per month in an area with 5 peak sun hours per day would need about 15 solar panels rated at 400W each.

If your area gets less sun, you will need more panels. If your home uses less electricity, you will need fewer.

As a rough guide, many average homes need around 15 to 22 solar panels to cover most or all of their electricity use.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

Real-world output is lower than rated output

A 400W solar panel does not produce 400W all day. Output changes with sunlight, heat, roof angle, shade, dust, and system losses.

In real use, installers often add a buffer of around 20% to 25% when sizing a system.

Roof space matters

A typical 400W residential panel takes about 17 to 22 square feet of roof space. If you need 15 to 20 panels, you may need roughly 300 to 400 square feet of usable roof area.

Shade from trees, chimneys, nearby buildings, or roof structures can reduce how many panels you can install.

Grid-tied and off-grid systems are different

Most home solar systems are grid-tied. That means your panels offset your electricity use, but you are still connected to the utility grid.

If you want your home to keep running during a power outage, you usually need a battery backup system and a compatible inverter. Solar panels alone may not power your home during an outage if the system is designed only for grid-tied use.
