Are Bifacial Solar Panels Worth the Extra Cost?

Bifacial solar panels capture sunlight from both sides. The front side receives direct sunlight, while the back side collects reflected light from the ground or nearby surfaces.

Under the right conditions, that rear-side boost can add roughly 5% to 30% more energy compared with a standard single-sided panel. Analysis from the U.S. Department of Energy has also shown that bifacial technology can increase system output by about 10% to 20% in suitable installations.

That extra power sounds useful. But bifacial panels often cost more upfront than monofacial panels. Depending on the product and market, the premium can range from a few percent to much more.

So when does the extra cost actually pay off? And when is it money you probably do not need to spend?

When Bifacial Solar Panels Are Worth It

Bifacial panels make the most sense when the back side has enough reflected light to work with.

Ground-mounted systems

Ground-mounted solar systems are one of the best use cases for bifacial panels. When the panels are raised above the ground, sunlight can reflect off the surface below and reach the rear side.

Light-colored surfaces make a big difference. Sand, white gravel, concrete, and pale ground surfaces reflect more sunlight than dark soil or grass. In these conditions, bifacial gain can often reach meaningful levels.

Fresh snow is even more reflective, which is why bifacial panels can perform especially well in snowy, open areas.

White commercial roofs

Commercial flat roofs with white membranes can also work well with bifacial panels.

A white TPO roof, for example, reflects much more light than a dark residential roof. That reflected light can help the rear side generate additional power.

Tracking systems

Bifacial panels can also work very well with tracking systems. Trackers follow the sun throughout the day, improving front-side exposure while also allowing more reflected light to reach the rear side.

For large solar projects, the combination of bifacial panels and trackers can significantly increase energy output compared with fixed monofacial systems.

Good clearance and low shading

Clearance matters. The more space there is between the panel and the reflective surface, the easier it is for light to reach the back side.

Around 3 feet, or 1 meter, of clearance is often a good target for stronger bifacial gain, but the ideal height depends on the system design.

Shading also matters. If trees, buildings, rails, or nearby panels block the rear side, the bifacial advantage drops quickly.

When Bifacial Panels Are Not Worth It

Bifacial panels are not always the better choice. In some installations, the rear side simply does not receive enough useful light.

Standard residential rooftops

Most residential rooftops are not ideal for bifacial panels, especially if they use dark asphalt shingles.

Dark roofing materials absorb light instead of reflecting it. That means the rear side of the panel receives very little extra sunlight. In this case, the bifacial gain may only be a few percent, which often does not justify the higher upfront cost.

For most homes with dark roofs, monofacial panels are usually the better value.

Dark or low-reflection surfaces

Bifacial panels also make less sense over dark dirt, dark gravel, grass, or dark roofing.

These surfaces do not reflect much light back toward the panel. Even if the panel itself is bifacial, the rear side has little light to capture.

Shaded or obstructed locations

If the rear side of the panel is blocked or shaded, the benefit is limited.

Trees, walls, nearby buildings, roof equipment, or closely spaced panel rows can all reduce rear-side light. In these cases, paying extra for bifacial technology may not deliver enough added energy to be worth it.

What About Portable Bifacial Solar Panels?

The same basic rule applies to portable bifacial solar panels: the back side needs reflected light.

The difference is that portable panels give you more control over the setup. Instead of being fixed to one roof or one ground surface, you can move the panel and choose a better charging location.
