Flexible solar panels are showing up everywhere—RV roofs, boat decks, van builds, curved cabin tops. Anywhere a rigid panel won't fit, a flexible one probably will. Prices range from budget to premium, and the difference isn't always obvious until something fails. Here's what actually matters before you buy.

What to Look For

Surface Material: ETFE vs. PET (Bigger Deal Than You'd Think)

The surface coating is the single biggest factor in how long your panel survives outdoors. ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is the clear choice for any permanent outdoor installation—UV-resistant, chemically stable, heat-tolerant, and moisture-proof. A quality ETFE panel holds up for 10 to 15 years in real outdoor conditions.

PET is cheaper, and that's where the advantages end. In high-UV environments, PET panels typically start yellowing, cracking, and losing output within 2 to 3 years. For anything mounted outside long-term, the price difference is worth it.

Cell Type: Monocrystalline vs. CIGS Thin-Film

Monocrystalline flexible panels are the most common option on the market. Efficiency typically runs 20% to 23%—the same cell technology used in most rigid panels. The trade-off: they're semi-flexible at best. Most have a minimum bend radius of 200–400mm, which means they'll follow a gentle curve but won't roll up.

CIGS thin-film panels (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) are genuinely flexible—some can be rolled up completely. They also handle low-light and high-heat conditions better than crystalline silicon. The downsides: efficiency is lower at 14% to 18%, and the complex manufacturing process makes them significantly more expensive upfront.

For most RV and boat owners, monocrystalline hits the better balance of cost and performance. CIGS makes sense if you need extreme flexibility or your installation gets a lot of shade.

Power Output: Match the Panel to Your System

Flexible panels range from compact 50W units to 400W+ setups. A simple rule of thumb:

Installation and Heat Management: Easy to Overlook, Harder to Fix Later

Flexible panels are typically bonded with strong adhesive—no drilling, no new holes in your roof or deck. But surface prep is non-negotiable. The mounting surface needs to be clean, dry, and free of any wax or oxidation. A panel that isn't properly bonded will peel off at highway speed or in rough seas. Ask anyone who's had it happen.
