New Solar Panel? 5 Checks to Do Before Your Return Window Closes

による ManagerGTPOW 06 Nov 2026 0 コメント

You've just unboxed a new solar panel. You set it up, and maybe it works fine. But then you notice a scratch, a loose connector, or a label that doesn't match what you ordered.

By the time you realize something is wrong, your return window may have closed.

A quick inspection when your panel arrives can save you a lot of hassle later. Here are five things to check before putting it to regular use, while you still have time to return or exchange it.

Check 1: Packaging and Panel Surface

Start with the packaging. Look for crushed corners, punctures, or signs of water damage. If the box has significant damage, take a few photos before throwing it away.

Next, inspect the panel itself.

Light scratches or small cosmetic marks may not affect performance, but some damage deserves more attention:

  • Cracks in the glass or protective surface
  • Peeling or separating layers
  • Damaged backing material
  • Exposed internal components

Not all portable panels use glass surfaces, so check the protective layer appropriate to your panel type.

If you spot structural damage or exposed internal materials, don't connect or use the panel. Photograph the damage and contact the seller.

Check 2: Folding Seams, Edges, and Moving Parts

The parts to inspect depend on the type of panel you bought.

For folding panels: Open the panel gently and check the folding sections for loose stitching, fraying, cracks, or separation. Make sure it opens and folds smoothly without catching or tearing. Check that the stand, mounting loops, and straps are securely attached.

For rigid or flexible panels: Look along the edges for deformation, peeling, or visible damage. Check that the junction box is securely attached and the cables enter without obvious gaps or damage.

You don't need to judge how much resistance a folding panel should have. Different designs feel different. What matters is that nothing appears damaged, loose, or difficult to operate.

Check 3: Connectors and Cables

A damaged connector or cable can cause charging problems, so give them a quick inspection.

Check each connector for cracks, bent parts, corrosion, or debris. Make sure the cable jacket has no cuts, exposed wires, or crushed sections.

If the panel uses locking connectors, check that the locking parts are intact. Follow the manual when connecting or disconnecting them, and never force a plug that doesn't fit.

Before disconnecting the panel, turn off or disconnect the connected device as instructed in the manual. Never disconnect MC4 or other DC connectors under load unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.

If a connector feels damaged or won't connect properly, don't try to repair it yourself. Take a photo and contact the seller.

Check 4: Labels and Specifications

Before testing the panel, make sure you received the right product.

Check three things:

  • Model number and rated power: Do they match your order confirmation?
  • Electrical specifications: Are the ratings on the panel consistent with the product listing and manual?
  • Product information: Do the panel, packaging, and documentation refer to the same model?

If the seller advertised specific certifications or compliance markings, check that the corresponding information is included on the product or in its documentation. Not every panel requires the same certifications, so focus on what was actually promised.

If something doesn't match, take photos of the label and packaging, and keep a copy of your order confirmation. It could be a shipping mistake or a labeling issue, but it's worth resolving before the return window closes.

Check 5: Test the Panel's Output in Direct Sunlight

Now it's time to see whether the panel actually works.

Choose a clear day, place the panel in direct sunlight, and make sure no trees, buildings, or other objects are casting shadows on it.

How you test it depends on the panel's outputs:

If you're using a power station: Connect the panel according to the manual. Make sure the panel's voltage and connector are compatible with the power station's solar input. Check whether the station recognizes the solar input and displays a charging wattage.

If your panel has USB outputs: Connect a compatible phone or power bank. Check whether the device recognizes the connection and starts charging.

If there's no input, first check the cables, connections, sunlight, and device compatibility. If everything is connected correctly but the panel still produces no output, contact the seller.

One thing to remember: don't expect the panel to reach its advertised wattage every time you test it. Rated power is measured under standardized laboratory conditions. Outdoor results vary with sunlight, temperature, panel angle, and the device being charged.

A lower reading doesn't automatically mean the panel is defective. The goal here is to confirm that it produces power, not to prove it reaches its maximum rated output. Outdoor output can vary significantly depending on sunlight intensity, panel temperature, angle, and the connected device's input limits. A reading below the panel's rated wattage doesn't automatically indicate a defect. If there's no input under suitable sunlight, double-check the connections and device compatibility. If the problem persists, contact the seller.

Final Step: Save Your Evidence Before the Return Window Closes

Keep the original packaging, manual, accessories, and order confirmation until you're sure the panel is working properly.

Save the photos or videos you took during the inspection. If you noticed a problem, document it as soon as possible rather than waiting until you have time to investigate further.

Also, check your seller's return deadline and conditions. Some sellers have specific requirements for packaging, accessories, or return shipping.

If something is wrong, contact the seller promptly. Explain the issue, share your photos, and ask about return or exchange options. Avoid opening the junction box, modifying the wiring, or attempting repairs yourself, as this could complicate a return or warranty claim.

A few minutes of checking when your panel arrives can save you trouble later. It's not about expecting something to go wrong. It's about making sure you got what you paid for while you still have time to put things right.
