When the power goes out, the first problems are usually practical: your phone needs charging, the Wi-Fi drops, and you’re trying to find a flashlight in the dark.

A longer outage raises bigger questions. How will you power a CPAP machine overnight? Can you keep food cold? What happens if the battery runs out before electricity returns?

A portable power station paired with solar panels can help cover essential needs without installing a whole-home backup system. The key is choosing it around what you actually need to power—and being realistic about how much sunlight you’ll have.

What You Actually Need to Keep Running

Before shopping, make a short list of essentials. Note each device’s power draw and how many hours you expect to use it.

  • Communication: Keep phones charged. For home internet, you may need to power both the router and a modem or fiber ONT. That only helps if your provider’s local network is still working. Mobile service may remain available, but outages and congestion can affect it too.
  • Lighting: LED lanterns and flashlights use relatively little energy and avoid the open-flame risk of candles.
  • Medical equipment: If you use a CPAP machine or another powered medical device, check the manufacturer’s backup-power requirements. CPAP humidifiers and heated tubing can substantially increase consumption. For equipment you cannot safely go without, arrange a backup plan with your care team or equipment supplier.
  • Food storage: An unopened refrigerator generally keeps food cold for about four hours. Keep the door closed, use an appliance thermometer, and follow official food-safety guidance.
  • Basic comfort: A fan can be a manageable load. An electric space heater usually isn’t—it can drain a small power station quickly. Keep warm clothing and blankets available for winter outages.

Separate what must run continuously from what you only need briefly. That makes a much bigger difference than simply counting devices.

How Portable Solar Fits Into a Blackout Plan

Check two different numbers: watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy; watts (W) describe how much power the station can deliver at once. A refrigerator’s compressor may need a brief startup surge above its running power.

For a rough example, a 1,000Wh station with 850Wh available after conversion losses would power a steady 60W load for about 14 hours. Actual runtime depends on the station, temperature, settings, and load. Refrigerators cycle on and off, so their daily energy consumption is usually a better guide than running watts alone.

Solar output also needs a realistic estimate. A 200W solar panel receiving the equivalent of three hours of full-strength sun, with 25% overall losses, would add roughly 450Wh that day—not necessarily refill a 1,000Wh battery.

Using it during an outage

  • Charge the station before forecast severe weather, following its storage and charging instructions.
  • Test your essential devices and cables ahead of time.
  • Confirm that the panel’s voltage, current, and connectors match the station’s solar-input requirements.
  • Set panels outside in direct sunlight when conditions are safe. Shade, short winter days, and heavy cloud can sharply reduce charging.
  • Keep the station dry and ventilated, within its operating-temperature limits.

Plug devices directly into the station. Never connect its output to a household wall outlet to feed your home’s wiring. Supplying household circuits requires approved transfer equipment and qualified installation.

When Portable Solar Makes More Sense Than a Generator

For phones, lighting, electronics, and other modest loads, a power station with solar can be a convenient choice—especially if you don’t have a safe place to operate a fuel-burning generator.

It’s much quieter. The panels are silent, although the station’s cooling fans may run during charging or heavier use.

There’s no combustion exhaust during operation. A power station can be used indoors according to its instructions. Fuel-burning generators must stay outdoors, never in a home or garage. U.S. safety guidance calls for at least 20 feet of separation from the home, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents.

There’s no fuel to store, and upkeep is simpler. You still need to check battery charge, inspect cables, and keep panels reasonably clean. Set a reminder to test the system before storm season rather than leaving it untouched for years.

It can be useful between outages. Depending on its weight and capacity, the same station may power camping equipment or devices away from an outlet.

But solar isn’t automatically the better choice for every household. A generator may be more practical for sustained high loads or a long outage with little sunlight, provided it can be operated safely and fuel is available.

An apartment also needs a realistic solar plan: a shaded balcony or unsuitable outdoor space can make charging disappointing. Check access to direct sun before buying panels.

Small portable systems are best treated as essential-device backup, not a replacement for whole-home heating, air conditioning, or other large electrical loads.
