Are Bifacial Solar Panels Monocrystalline?

par ManagerGTPOW 27 Aug 2026 0 commentaire

Bifacial solar panels can generate extra power by collecting light from both sides. But does that mean they’re made with monocrystalline cells? The short answer is: not necessarily, but in practice, almost all modern bifacial panels use monocrystalline silicon.

Here’s what actually matters.

What Makes a Panel Bifacial?

A bifacial solar panel is built to absorb sunlight from both the front and the back. Instead of an opaque backsheet, it uses a transparent or translucent backsheet, or a dual-glass design. This allows the rear side to capture reflected and scattered light from the ground, snow, sand, or nearby surfaces.

Monocrystalline and polycrystalline refer to the type of silicon cells inside the panel — not to whether the panel is bifacial. In theory, a bifacial panel can use either type of cell.

In reality, the vast majority of bifacial panels sold today are monocrystalline. Monocrystalline cells offer higher efficiency and better performance in low light, which makes the extra cost of a bifacial design worthwhile. Polycrystalline bifacial panels do exist, but they’re uncommon and mostly found in older installations or very low-cost projects.

Why Monocrystalline Is the Standard for Bifacial Solar Panels

For a bifacial solar panel to deliver meaningful extra output, the front side needs strong efficiency. Monocrystalline cells currently deliver the best performance in this regard, which is why manufacturers have largely moved away from polycrystalline for bifacial designs.

If you’re comparing options, a good monofacial monocrystalline panel will usually outperform a polycrystalline bifacial panel in real-world use.

GTPOW makes portable bifacial solar panels using monocrystalline cells. Their 40W and 100W models are designed for camping, overlanding, and off-grid use, where the ability to capture light from both sides can be useful on reflective surfaces like sand or snow.

FAQ

Q: Are monocrystalline bifacial panels better than polycrystalline bifacial panels?

Yes. Monocrystalline bifacial panels have higher front-side efficiency and better low-light performance. That’s why most buyers prefer them.

Q: Is a polycrystalline bifacial panel better than a regular monofacial monocrystalline panel?

No. A standard monofacial monocrystalline panel is generally the better choice. Polycrystalline technology is older and less efficient, and the “bifacial” feature on a polycrystalline panel usually adds very little real-world benefit.

Q: Will a bifacial monocrystalline panel always produce more power?

Not automatically. The rear side only generates extra power when there’s good reflected light — such as from snow, sand, light-colored ground, or a reflective surface. On dark grass or shaded ground, the rear-side gain can be very small.

The Bottom Line

Bifacial and monocrystalline are two separate things. Bifacial describes how the panel is built to collect light from both sides. Monocrystalline describes the type of silicon cells inside. In practice, nearly all modern bifacial panels are monocrystalline because that’s what makes the bifacial design effective.

If you’re looking at bifacial solar panels, monocrystalline is the clear choice in almost all cases.
