Don’t Replace Your Panel Just Yet

Your solar panel used to charge your portable power station faster. Two years later, the input watts look lower, and you’re wondering whether the panel is wearing out.

Don’t replace it just yet. A lower reading doesn’t automatically mean permanent damage. Dirt, shade, hotter weather, or the power station itself could explain the difference.

This guide focuses on portable and folding solar panels used for camping, RV travel, and backup power. Before spending money on a replacement, check whether you’re seeing normal aging, a change in conditions, or a fault that needs attention.

Normal Solar Panel Degradation Is Usually Slow

Crystalline-silicon solar panels gradually lose some output as they age. Long-term degradation is often measured in fractions of a percent per year. Around 0.5%–1% annually is a rough reference, not a guarantee for every panel.

Portable folding panels also have hinges, flexible backing, and wiring that face different stresses from permanently mounted panels. Check your model’s performance warranty rather than assuming it will age like a rooftop module.

A small decline after two years can be normal. It is also easy to confuse with everyday changes in sunlight and temperature.

A persistent 20% drop deserves investigation—but only after comparing similar conditions. It does not, by itself, prove that the panel is damaged.

What Else Can Cause Lower Output?

Several problems can look like aging. Some involve the panel; others have nothing to do with its condition.

  • Dirt and partial shade. Bird droppings, leaves, or shadows from a branch or RV awning can reduce output. Even a narrow shadow may matter, depending on the panel’s wiring.
  • Heat and seasonal changes. Hot cells generally produce less power than cooler cells under the same sunlight. Lower winter sun and shorter days can also mean slower charging.
  • Wear around folding sections. Repeated stress can damage hinges, edge seals, or wiring between sections. Look for splitting, peeling, or exposed conductors. The cell sections themselves should not be bent.
  • Moisture intrusion. Damaged seals may allow water into a junction box or connection point. Warning signs include condensation, corrosion, discoloration, or intermittent charging.
  • Cell cracks. Impacts, stepping on the panel, or bending it incorrectly can crack silicon cells. These cracks may be invisible, and their effect varies.
  • Cable or connector problems. Loose contacts, corrosion, and damaged cables can reduce delivered power or cause dropouts. Long, undersized extension cables add losses too.

Your power station may also limit charging when its battery is nearly full, outside its charging-temperature range, or receiving as much solar input as it supports.

How to Check a Solar Panel With Low Output

Start with a repeatable test, not a comparison with the highest reading you remember.

Check the charging setup. Test with the power station comfortably below full charge and within its specified operating-temperature range. Check its solar-input limits and charging settings.

Clean the panel safely. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove loose grit gently before wiping with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and pressure washing.

Test in clear, direct sunlight. Aim the panel toward the sun and remove all shade, including shadows across a small corner. Compare readings under similar conditions. 

A panel’s rated wattage is measured under standardized test conditions, not guaranteed during every outdoor session.

Inspect the connections and folding areas. Look for loose plugs, damaged insulation, corrosion, peeling edges, or moisture. Follow the shutdown procedure before handling connections; illuminated panels can still generate voltage.

Treat voltage testing as optional. If you know how to use a suitably rated multimeter safely, a disconnected panel’s open-circuit voltage, or Voc, can provide a clue. Compare it with the specification while allowing for temperature and light conditions.

Normal Voc does not prove the panel can deliver full power, and low Voc alone does not prove internal damage. Do not improvise current tests or open a sealed junction box.

When to Keep Using It, Repair It, or Replace It

Base the decision on safety and a repeatable fault—not one disappointing wattage reading.

Cell cracks and failed laminates generally are not practical DIY repairs. Some external parts may be replaceable, but sealed components should not be treated as a weekend repair project.

How to Prevent Avoidable Damage

A few handling habits can reduce wear:

  • Fold only where designed. Do not bend cell sections or force stiff hinges. Follow the manufacturer’s temperature limits, especially in cold weather.
  • Store it clean and dry. Let the panel dry before folding it away. Do not assume the panel surface, ports, and junction box share the same water-resistance rating.
  • Remove salt carefully. After coastal use, clean exterior surfaces as directed. Do not rinse connector contacts or spray water into the junction box.
  • Clean when needed. Remove bird droppings and other buildup promptly. Avoid rubbing dry sand across the surface.
  • Protect it during travel. Keep heavy gear off the panel, secure it against movement, and never carry it by its cable.
  • Inspect it periodically. Check hinges, edges, cables, and connectors before trips and every few months during regular use.

Check the Cause Before Spending the Money

Two years of use is not, on its own, a reason to replace a solar panel. Normal degradation is usually gradual, while sunlight, temperature, shade, and charging limits can change the displayed watts much more quickly.

Clean it, check the setup, and compare performance under similar conditions. If output stays low—or you find moisture, damaged wiring, or overheating—stop guessing and get support.

Replace the panel when a confirmed fault makes repair unsafe or uneconomical, not simply because it has reached its second birthday.
