Boondocking changes everything about how you manage power. 

No 30-amp pedestal to plug into. No shoreline power. No neighbors tolerating a loud generator running past 8 PM on public BLM land. Every single watt you consume has to come from the sky and sit in your battery bank.

Get the math wrong, and your inverter starts screaming low-voltage alarms by day three. Get it right, and you can stay parked off-grid for weeks at a time.

The Air Conditioner Reality Check

Let's address the number one question new RVers ask: Can I run my rooftop AC off solar?

The honest answer: It’s rarely practical for true boondocking.

A standard 13,500 or 15,000 BTU RV air conditioner pulls 1,300W to 1,700W while running. 

  • To power it for just 4 hours, you burn roughly 5,500Wh to 6,800Wh.
  • That requires at least 1,200W+ of solar panels covering every square inch of your roof, a 600Ah+ lithium bank, and a SoftStart unit just to handle the compressor's startup surge.
  • The moment a cloud passes, your massive array drops to 300W, and your batteries get drained in a flash.

If you must have AC in extreme heat, carry a quiet dual-fuel inverter generator or head to an RV park with shore power. Use solar for your baseline daily living loads, not for cooling a 30-foot metal box in 100°F heat.

The Pro Trick: Rooftop Solar vs. Ground Deploy

Here is a common boondocking dilemma: in the summer, you want to park your RV under trees for shade to keep the rig cool. But if you do that, your rooftop panels produce next to nothing.

The smartest setup isn't just loading up your roof. It's splitting your power:

  • Put 400W on the roof for continuous charging while driving and camping in wide-open desert.
  • Keep a 100W–200W portable folding solar panel (solar suitcase) stored in your pass-through. When parked in tree shade, plug the portable panel into your side solar port and aim it right at the sun 30 feet away.

How to Calculate Your Exact Daily Needs

Skip the guesswork. Follow this 4-step power audit:

2. Find the watts: Check the label (Volts × Amps = Watts).
3. Multiply Watts × Hours used daily:  
   (Example: Starlink at 50W × 8 hours = 400Wh).
4. Sum your total daily Wh and work backward:

Solar Watts Needed = Daily Wh Needed÷Peak Sun Hours (usually 4 to 5) ÷ 0.75

(The 0.75 accounts for real-world panel angles, heat loss, and wiring efficiency).

Example: If your total daily burn is 1,500Wh, and you expect 5 hours of good sun:  
1,500÷5 ÷0.75 = 400W of solar
